Maria, I like this image a lot and decided that I'd like to post my group discussion comment also here. I was right in believing that this is indeed a place of retreat 'far from the madding crowd' - even if only a couple of miles away from where the crowd is (and not necessarily 'madding!). The artist always adds some (or a lot) of her own feeling to the image, often quite unawares. As for the intense blue of the sky, I know that North American landscapes offer more dramatic contrasts in colors and light than one would normally see in Europe (perhaps this is arguable), so it may appear unnatural to those who have not actually seen it. The little enhancement that you have made only emphasizes the beauty of this simple scene.
